What is Paulaner?

From monastery beer to Oktoberfest

Paulaner comes from Munich. The name refers to the Paulaner monks, a monastic order also known as the Minims. In the 17th century, they brewed beer in their monastery in Munich, and that is where the brewery's history begins. Paulaner is also known for Salvator, a strong doppelbock. It is also one of the six Munich breweries allowed to serve beer at Oktoberfest.

In the Netherlands, most people know Paulaner for its Hefe-Weissbier: an unfiltered wheat beer in a half-liter bottle. It is fruity and spicy, with notes of banana and a slight bitterness. People often search for it as paulaner weissbier. Those who do not drink alcohol can choose Paulaner Weissbier 0.0 or Zitrone 0.0, an alcohol-free weissbier with lemon soda.

How to drink it

How to pour Paulaner

Pour a weissbier gently to create a thick, firm head.

Slowly and at an angle

Rinse the glass with cold water and hold it at an angle. Let the beer run gently down the side and slowly straighten the glass as it fills.

The yeast on top

Leave a little in the bottle, swirl the bottle around and pour the loosened yeast on top last. This gives the beer the cloudy colour it should have.

Chilled, at 6 to 8 degrees

Drink Weissbier chilled but not ice-cold. Zitrone 0.0 can be colder, straight from the fridge.
