A young red wine that tastes flat straight from the bottle changes noticeably after standing in a decanter for twenty minutes: the tannins soften and the fruit comes forward. With an older bottle, you use the decanter to leave the sediment behind instead. In both cases, a wide base helps, and this decanter has one thanks to its broad shape.
