Bormioli Rocco Planeo

The three wine sizes sit closer together than the numbers suggest. The 38 cl is the bowl for white wine: small enough that the wine stays cold until you have finished it. Reach for the 45 cl if you want one wine glass for everything, because it is roomy enough for red and not too round for white.

The 54 cl is the largest and made for full-bodied red wine, where a pour of 15 cl still keeps plenty of air above it. If you want more room, see the large wine glasses. The 36 cl tumbler is the water glass and the 24 cl flute the narrow model for bubbles.

Pour a wine glass up to the widest point of the bowl and no higher. On the 54 cl that works out at about a third of its capacity. The space above is where the aromas gather before you smell them.

Pour the 24 cl flute in two goes along the wall, so the foam can settle in between. For a Bellini put the peach purée in the bottom first and top up with prosecco. An Aperol Spritz belongs in the 54 cl wine glass, filled to the rim with ice.

Bormioli Rocco makes Planeo from lead-free crystal glass, machine-drawn so the stem comes out of one piece with the bowl. That is stronger than a stem attached separately, because that join is the weak seam that gives way first on cheap glassware.

The glasses can go in the dishwasher. Stand them upright and clear of each other, and hold them by the bowl when you dry them so no twisting force reaches the stem.
