Bormioli Rocco Planeo

The three wine glass sizes are closer together than the numbers suggest. The 38 cl is the bowl for white wine: small enough to keep the wine cold until you finish it. Choose the 45 cl if you want one wine glass for everything, because it is spacious enough for red wine without being too bulbous for white.

The 54 cl is the largest and intended for full-bodied red wine, in which a 15 cl pour leaves enough air above it. Those who want more space should look at the large wine glasses. The 36 cl tumbler is the water glass, and the 24 cl flute is the narrow model for sparkling wine.

Pour wine into the glass up to the bowl’s widest point, but no higher. For the 54 cl glass, that amounts to approximately one third of its capacity. The space above is where the aromas collect before you smell them.

Pour the 24 cl flute in two stages along the side so the foam can settle in between. Bellini first add the peach purée to the bottom and then top up with prosecco. An Aperol Spritz belongs in the 54 cl wine glass, filled to the rim with ice.

Bormioli Rocco makes Planeo from lead-free crystal glass, machine-drawn so the stem comes out of one piece with the bowl. That is stronger than a stem attached separately, because that join is the weak seam that gives way first on cheap glassware.

The glasses can go in the dishwasher. Stand them upright and clear of each other, and hold them by the bowl when you dry them so no twisting force reaches the stem.

If you want to arrange water and wine in one go, the mixed boxes are listed under glass sets.
