Budgetline

A canteen, a club bar, or a party in a community center calls for different glasses than a set table at home. You need a lot of them, they pass from hand to hand, and one occasionally gets broken. Mammoet’s Budgetline is the straightforward solution: simple, sturdy glasses sold by the dozen.

The range covers the Dutch basics: a 19 cl flute, a 29 cl vase glass, a 21 cl splash glass, a 27 cl long drink glass, and a 3.5 cl shot glass. The model names refer to neighborhoods in Amsterdam, giving the series its own character.

Which Budgetline sizes do you need

Start with the beer, because that is usually what it comes down to. The small 19 cl beer glass is the one that gets poured often and empties quickly, so the beer stays cold. The 29 cl standard glass is the size most guests ask for. The 21 cl slim glass is narrow and tall and meant for soft drinks or a small beer, and you take the 27 cl longdrink glass for cola, orange soda and mixed drinks with ice. The 3.5 cl shot glass closes the range. For a party, count on a good two glasses per guest.

How to pour and serve from these glasses

Pour a standard beer at an angle and straighten the glass as soon as it is half full; you then get a head about two fingers deep without the beer losing its carbonation. Rinse beer glasses with cold water before pouring, because a dry warm glass makes the foam collapse straight away. Fill the longdrink glass with ice first and only then with soft drink; a cuba libre is right in this size. For a mojito you press mint and lime at the bottom and spoon crushed ice on top.

Pressed glass: what to expect and what not

This is pressed soda-lime glass, not crystal and not tempered glass. That means a thick base and a sturdy glass that copes with many hands, in a range built for large quantities. It also means the wall is thicker and the rim less refined than on a blown glass. The dishwasher is no problem; place the glasses apart in the rack so the rims do not knock together.

Looking further in the range

If you want to see what else the brand makes, have a look at Mammoet. If you are after a craft beer glass with a shape of its own rather than a standard beer glass, the craft beer glasses are the right turning. For shots and spirits, the individual sizes are under the shot glasses. And anyone buying in these quantities only keeps up with the cleaning with a good glass brush and a rack that keeps the glasses apart.
