Start with what goes in the glass. For whisky, rum or a cocktail on ice, take the tumbler: 30 cl if you use one large chunk of ice, 35 cl if you work with cubes and need more room. For anything you top up with tonic or a soft drink, take the 45 cl long drink glass, or the narrower 31 cl tubo, which takes up less space on a tray. The coloured tumblers in pink, lilac and blue are the same shape in a tinted version, handy when you want to see at the table which glass belongs to whom. The 30 cl tumbler is the size an old fashioned belongs in: one chunk of ice, three centilitres of bourbon and enough wall height to stir without spilling. For a gin & tonic take the 45 cl long drink glass, fill it to the top with ice and pour the tonic in down the side of the glass so the carbonation stays put. If you are pouring neat, keep it to four centilitres in the tumbler.

Tempered glass is thermally strengthened: the rim and the base are the strongest, and that is exactly where breakage normally starts. That is why Brixton copes effortlessly with a dishwasher that runs twenty times an evening. Wash on a short glassware programme, rinse well and dry with a lint-free cloth, because limescale shows up all the more on dark bases. Place the glasses upright in the basket and do not let them touch. A glass brush removes residue from the base.
