Bormioli Rocco Novecento

Novecento is recognizable by the vertical ridges that run upward from the base and fan out at the top of the bowl. Bormioli Rocco based the design on glassware from the 1930s, and those art deco lines are precisely what made the collection popular behind the bar.

What you get is a complete small repertoire: coupes in 22, 23.5, and 25 cl, a 15.5 cl Nick and Nora, tumblers in 37 and 40.5 cl, and a set of liqueur glasses. Enough to build a cocktail cabinet without switching styles.

Coupe, Nick and Nora or tumbler

The right choice depends on what you're pouring. A coupe has a wide, shallow bowl and is meant for drinks served without ice: the 22 cl is the most-used size, while the 25 cl leaves room for a foam head from egg white or aquafaba. The 15.5 cl Nick and Nora is narrower and deeper, so less surface is exposed to the air and the drink stays cold longer. That makes it the better choice for spirit-forward serves. The 37 and 40.5 cl tumblers are the counterpart: thick base, built for ice. The full brand range is under Bormioli Rocco, the shape comparison under champagne coupe glasses.

What goes in which glass

Chill your coupe first: fill it with ice and water for ten minutes, tip that out, and only then strain your drink in. A coupe has a stem for a reason, so hold it there and your hand won't warm the drink. A daiquiri belongs in the 22 cl coupe, filled to about a centimetre below the rim. The Nick and Nora is the shape for an aged, stirred drink. For an old fashioned reach for the 37 cl tumbler and one large ice block, which melts more slowly than loose cubes.

Thin at the rim, strong at the base

The coupes are thin-walled at the rim, because that is where your lip meets the glass. That same thin rim is also the most vulnerable spot. So never stand coupes upside down on a shelf and don't let them knock against each other in the dishwasher. The range is dishwasher-safe, but a short, low-temperature cycle noticeably extends their life. Polish afterwards with a linen cloth for a streak-free finish.

If this isn't what you're looking for

If you are specifically after a glass for shaken cocktails served without ice, the overview of cocktail glasses is broader than this range. For the narrow bowl on its own there is the Nick and Nora glasses category. If you want the tumblers for whisky, see the old fashioned glasses. And to make the drinks themselves you need tools: those are under cocktail shakers, from shaker to strainer.
