Start with how many glasses you need, because that is where the real difference lies. The 25.5 cl tumbler comes in twelves, which makes it the obvious choice for a kitchen cupboard in daily use, or for a venue that needs spare stock. At 23 and 31 cl the wine glasses are on the small side: they suit crisp white wine and rosé, and house wine by the glass where you pour a fixed measure. The 12.5 cl flute is a compact size for a single glass of something sparkling, not for a long evening.

Fill a 31 cl wine glass to about a third and you keep air above the wine while the pour stays sensible. The tumbler is for water with a meal and for soft drinks, but it is also the shape you use to serve a glass of sangria with fruit, without the pieces getting in the way. The flute is meant for sparkling wine and for a Mimosa of equal parts orange juice and bubbles, which you mix only just before serving so the fizz stays in.
