Licor Beirão
Licor Beirão is Portugal's best-known liqueur. It is sweet and spicy, with orange, cinnamon and a hint of anise. In Portugal, it is served over ice or as a Caipirão, with lime. Here you can read what Beirão is, what it tastes like and how to drink it.
Portugal's liqueur
Licor Beirão comes from Lousã, a small town in the Beira region in central Portugal. That is also where the name comes from. The liqueur has existed since the nineteenth century and is still made by the Redondo family, now in its third generation.
Beirão is made from seeds, herbs and spices, thirteen in total according to the producer, including mint, cinnamon, cardamom and lavender. These are steeped in alcohol for a few weeks and then distilled twice in copper stills. The result is a sweet, aromatic liqueur with 22% alcohol.

Three ways to drink Beirão
In Portugal, Beirão is mainly enjoyed chilled: with ice after a meal, or in a Caipirão on a terrace.
With ice
Pour 4 to 5 cl of Beirão into a tumbler with a few ice cubes. The ice makes it more refreshing. A slice of orange goes well with it.
Glass: tumbler →Caipirão
The best-known mix: add half a lime, cut into wedges, to a tumbler, muddle lightly, fill the glass with crushed ice and pour 6 cl of Beirão over it. No sugar is needed; the liqueur is sweet enough already.
Similar to a caipirinha →Neat after a meal
Lightly chilled in a small liqueur glass, as a digestif after a meal.
