A fig liqueur that became a party classic
Kleiner Feigling came onto the market in 1990 from the German liqueur distillery Behn in Eckernförde, near Kiel. It’s a vodka-based liqueur with fig flavor: “Feigling” literally means “little fig,” but in German it also means “coward,” a play on words the brand has never let go of. The bottle is small and square, recognizable by the green fig on the label.
Its success comes down to the size and temperature: 2 cl, ice-cold from the freezer, down in one. At 20% alcohol, Kleiner Feigling is much milder than a regular shot, and its sweet fig flavor makes it approachable. A whole range of flavors later appeared under the same name in Germany; in the Netherlands, the original is especially widely available.

The 2 cl bottles are the handiest; the 50 cl bottle is the best value.
Sweet fig, served ice-cold
Fig & caramel
Sweet dried fig with a hint of caramel and vanilla. Little alcohol bite on the nose.
Sweet and smooth
Full and sweet, with fig and red fruit. The 20% alcohol is barely noticeable, making it easy to drink.
Short and fresh
Short, clean finish with a slightly fresh note. Served ice-cold, it’s mostly fruit you taste.

Three ways to drink Kleiner Feigling
Kleiner Feigling should be ice-cold. Put the bottle in the freezer for at least two hours; its alcohol content keeps it from freezing, but it does become syrupy.
As a shot straight from the freezer
Pour 2 cl of ice-cold Kleiner Feigling into a shot glass and drink it in one go. The cold makes the sweetness less overpowering and the drink a little thicker.

4 cl Kleiner Feigling with 150 ml cola or Sprite in a highball glass filled with ice. The fig flavor pairs surprisingly well with cola, making for a smooth, sweet long drink.
