What is Berentzen?

From German grain distillery to Dutch party drink

The Berentzen family began distilling korn in 1758 in Haselünne, in Germany's Emsland region: a neutral grain spirit that occupies the place in northern Germany that jenever does in the Netherlands. The company is still based in Haselünne and now makes a whole range of liqueurs on that grain base.

The breakthrough came with Apfelkorn: korn blended with juice from Golden Delicious and Gala apples, bottled at 18%. The result is sweet, fresh and smooth enough to drink ice-cold as a shot. In the Netherlands, Apfelkorn became a fixture at parties and in bars; there are also Peerkorn with pear and Apfeltaartje with apple pie flavour.

How to drink it

Three ways to drink Berentzen

Apfelkorn should be served ice-cold. Put the bottle in the freezer for a few hours; its low alcohol content makes it syrupy, which makes the shot even more enjoyable.

As a shot straight from the freezer

Pour 2 cl of ice-cold Apfelkorn into a shot glass and drink it in one go. The cold softens the sweetness and lets the fresh apple take center stage.

With sparkling water or tonic

4 cl Apfelkorn with 150 ml sparkling water or tonic in a highball glass filled with ice, garnished with an apple slice. Fresher, lighter, and perfect for a warm day.

As an apple pie shot

Pour the Little Apple Pie ice-cold into a shot glass and top it with a dollop of whipped cream and a pinch of cinnamon. The best-known Dutch dessert shot, ready in ten seconds.

What percentage of alcohol is in Apfelkorn?
Berentzen Apfelkorn contains 18% alcohol. Peerkorn is 15%, and Apfeltaartje is 14.5%. A 2 cl shot therefore contains about a third of a standard drink.
What exactly is korn?
A German grain spirit made from rye, wheat, or barley, with no added flavorings: Germany's counterpart to jenever, but without juniper berries. Berentzen blends this korn with fruit juice, giving Apfelkorn its fresh apple flavor.
What is Berentzen Apfelkorn made from?
Made from grain spirit blended with juice from Golden Delicious and Gala apples, with added sugar. This gives it a fresh, fruity taste instead of an artificially sweet one.
Should you drink Apfelkorn chilled?
Yes. Put the bottle in the freezer for a few hours: it will not freeze, but it will become syrupy and taste considerably less sweet. At room temperature, the sweetness is much more pronounced.
How many shots are in a bottle of Apfelkorn?
About 35 shots of 2 cl in a 70 cl bottle, and around 50 in the one-litre bottle. The pack of 12 bottles of 2 cl contains exactly one shot per bottle.
Where does Berentzen come from?
From Haselünne in the German Emsland region, where the Berentzen family has been distilling grain spirits since 1758. The company is still based there and, alongside Apfelkorn, produces a range of other liqueurs using the same grain base.
