What is Rémy Martin?

Fine Champagne only, since 1724

Rémy Martin is a cognac house from the city of Cognac, founded in 1724 by winegrower Rémy Martin. The house stands out for one choice: all its cognacs are 'Fine Champagne', a blend of eaux-de-vie from the region's two finest crus, Grande Champagne and Petite Champagne, with at least half Grande Champagne. This limestone-rich soil produces cognacs that age slowly and have great finesse.

The centaur on the label refers to the founder's zodiac sign, Sagittarius. Rémy Martin is the world's second-largest cognac name after Hennessy and belongs to Rémy Cointreau, the group that also makes Cointreau. VSOP is its best-known bottle; above it are 1738 Accord Royal, XO and Louis XIII, the cognac in the crystal Baccarat decanter.

How to drink it

Three ways to drink Rémy Martin

Cognac is best enjoyed neat from a tulip-shaped glass, at room temperature. VSOP and Tercet also work well on the rocks or in a cocktail.

Neat, in a tulip glass

Pour 30 ml into a tulip-shaped cognac glass and hold it in your hand for a moment to warm it gently. Smell, take small sips, and let it breathe. No ice with XO or Louis XIII.

Glass: cognac glass →

On the rocks

50 ml VSOP or Tercet over a large ice cube in a tumbler. The ice makes the cognac cooler and lighter; the brand itself recommends this for its VSOP.

Glass: tumbler →

Sidecar

50 ml Rémy Martin VSOP, 25 ml Cointreau, and 25 ml lemon juice, shaken and strained into a coupe with a sugar rim. The classic cognac cocktail, preferably made with two products from the same house.

What percentage alcohol does Rémy Martin contain?
Rémy Martin VSOP, 1738 Accord Royal, XO, and Louis XIII all contain 40% alcohol. Tercet is bottled at 42%.
What does Fine Champagne mean for Rémy Martin?
It has nothing to do with sparkling wine. Here, Champagne is the name of the two best wine-growing areas in the Cognac region, Grande and Petite Champagne, named for their chalky soil. A Fine Champagne cognac is made exclusively from eaux-de-vie from these two crus, with at least 50% Grande Champagne. Rémy Martin makes only Fine Champagne.
What is the difference between VSOP, 1738, XO, and Louis XIII?
VSOP (Very Superior Old Pale) contains eaux-de-vie aged 4 to 14 years and is fresh and fruity. 1738 Accord Royal is aged in toasted barrels, with eaux-de-vie up to 20 years old, and is sweeter and richer. XO (Extra Old) is a blend aged 10 to 37 years, full-bodied and complex. Louis XIII is the top tier: eaux-de-vie aged 40 to 100 years in a crystal decanter, costing thousands of euros.
Rémy Martin or Hennessy?
The two largest cognac houses. Rémy Martin makes only Fine Champagne and is therefore a little fruitier and more elegant; Hennessy blends from all crus and is more robust and spicier. Hennessy VS is cheaper and the best-known mixing cognac; Rémy Martin VSOP is the entry-level option in the Netherlands. Neat, it comes down to personal taste.
How do you drink Rémy Martin?
Drink the VSOP neat at room temperature from a tulip glass, on the rocks in a tumbler, or in a Sidecar. Drink the 1738 and XO neat, as a digestif after a meal. Drink Louis XIII neat, in small sips, without ice or water.
How much does Rémy Martin Louis XIII cost?
Around three to four thousand euros in the Netherlands for 70 cl. The price reflects the eaux-de-vie aged 40 to 100 years, exclusively from Grande Champagne, and the handmade Baccarat crystal decanter with its fleur-de-lis stopper.
