What is Jack Daniel's Bonded?

What does bottled in bond mean?

Bottled in bond is an American quality standard with four requirements. The whiskey comes from a single distillery, in this case Jack Daniel's in Lynchburg. It's distilled in a single distilling season. It's aged for at least four years. And it's bottled at a minimum of 50% alcohol. Jack Daniel's Bonded meets all four requirements.

Otherwise, it's just Jack: sour mash, filtered through three meters of sugar maple charcoal over about ten days, and aged in new, charred oak barrels. The difference is the proof. With 10 percentage points more alcohol than Old No. 7, it's fuller and richer, with brown sugar and nuts, and stands up in cocktails where regular Jack disappears.

How to drink it

How to get the most out of 50%

Bonded is strong enough to experiment with water. Taste it neat first, then with a few drops of water, and use it in cocktails that need body.

Neat, then with water

Pour 3 cl into a tulip-shaped glass and take a small first sip. Then add a teaspoon of cold water and taste again: the alcohol subsides, bringing out the brown sugar and nuts.

In a Manhattan

50 ml Bonded, 25 ml sweet vermouth, and 2 dashes of bitters, stirred over ice and strained into a chilled coupe. At 50%, the whiskey stays in charge of the vermouth.

Everything about Jack Daniel's →
What is the alcohol content of Jack Daniel's Bonded?
Jack Daniel's Bonded is 50% ABV. That's the minimum for bottled-in-bond, and 10 percentage points more than Old No. 7 and Gentleman Jack.
How old is Jack Daniel's Bonded?
According to bottled-in-bond rules, it has been aged in barrels for at least four years. The bottle doesn't state an exact age.
What's the difference between Jack Daniel's Bonded and Old No. 7?
Bonded comes from a single distilling season, is at least four years old, and is bottled at 50% ABV. Old No. 7 is 40% ABV. That makes Bonded fuller and richer, with brown sugar and nuts, and better able to stand up to ice and cocktails.
Should you add water to Jack Daniel's Bonded?
You don't have to, but it's a good idea to try it. A few drops of cold water take the edge off the 50% ABV and bring out the nuts and sweetness.
Is Jack Daniel's Bonded a bourbon?
No, it's a Tennessee whiskey. Before aging, it is filtered through maple charcoal, like every Jack Daniel's.
