What is Jägermeister? A herbal bitter liqueur from 1934
Jägermeister, also often spelled Jagermeister, is a German Kräuterlikör. It contains 56 herbs, roots, blossoms and spices. Curt Mast came up with the recipe in 1934 in Wolfenbüttel, and it hasn't changed since. A few of the herbs in Jägermeister are known, such as star anise, ginger, saffron, licorice and citrus peel. The exact blend remains a secret.
First, the herbs are steeped in water and alcohol. Then the liqueur rests for a year in oak barrels. The result is dark brown and 35% ABV. Sweet and herbal, with a bitter core. The stag with the cross on the label is based on the legend of Saint Hubert, the patron saint of hunters.
In brief
What types of Jägermeister are there?

Jägermeister
The original, in the green bottle. Herbal, sweet and bitter all at once, made to be drunk ice-cold as a shot.

Jägermeister Orange
The famous herbal recipe, now with orange and mandarin. Fruitier and fresher. Also delicious with tonic.

Jägermeister 1 liter
The big bottle for a party. It just fits in the freezer and will last you all evening.

Jägermeister magnum
Almost two liters of Jägermeister. Handy if you often have lots of friends over.

Jägermeister minis
Small bottles containing exactly one shot. Easy to take on the go, give as a treat, or pack in a cooler.

Jägermeister with shot glasses
A 70 cl bottle with two Jägermeister shot glasses. Of the whole range, this is the gift you see most often.
Of all the Jägermeister varieties, the classic green bottle straight from the freezer is still our favorite.
Sweet first, then spicy, then bitter
Star anise, licorice & citrus
A cloud of herbs. Anise, licorice, ginger and orange peel, with something dark and syrupy-sweet underneath.
Sweet and syrupy, then spicy
Straight from the freezer, it’s thick and sweet. At room temperature, the herbs and bitterness come through much more strongly.
Bitter and warming
Long and warming, with licorice and that lightly medicinal bitterness you find in every herbal liqueur.
The flavor profile of Jägermeister when served ice-cold. Orange is fruitier and less bitter.
What goes well with Jägermeister? Three ways
According to the manufacturer, Jägermeister should be served at -18 °C, straight from the freezer. It doesn’t freeze. It just gets thick and smooth.
Ice-cold as a shot
Put the bottle in the freezer and pour 2 to 4 cl into a shot glass. Put the shot glasses in there for an hour too, so your shot stays cold longer.
