What is Laphroaig?

Islay’s boldest whisky

Laphroaig (pronounced: la-frojg) is a single malt whisky from the Scottish island of Islay, made since 1815 at a distillery by the sea near Port Ellen. The name means something like “the beautiful hollow by the broad bay.” Laphroaig still malts some of its barley itself and dries it over peat fires, giving the whisky its intense smoky flavor.

The result is a whisky unlike any other: peat smoke, iodine, tar, seaweed, and salt, with a surprising sweetness underneath. Laphroaig calls itself “the most richly flavored Scotch whisky in the world” and has held the Royal Warrant of Charles, then still Prince of Wales, since 1994. The brand is part of Beam Suntory.

Thick and rounded, with smoke, salt and pepper, and a surprising sweetness from bourbon casks. More vanilla and coconut in the Quarter Cask.

The smoke lingers for minutes, with salt, licorice and a dry, medicinal note.

Sweet 2/5

How to drink it

Three ways to drink Laphroaig

Drink Laphroaig neat, at room temperature, from a glass that concentrates the aromas. A drop of water opens it up; ice closes it down.

Neat, with a drop of water

Pour 30 ml into a tulip-shaped tasting glass and let it sit for a few minutes. Then add a few drops of water: the smoke softens and the sweet vanilla comes through.

Glass: tasting glass →

On the rocks

You can, but go easy: one large ice cube in a tumbler chills the whisky without diluting it too quickly. The ice softens the smoke, which some people actually prefer.

Glass: tumbler →

Penicillin

50 ml blended Scotch, 20 ml lemon juice, 20 ml honey-ginger syrup, shaken, then topped with 10 ml Laphroaig as a smoky 'float'. The modern classic with Islay whisky.

What percentage alcohol is in Laphroaig?
Laphroaig 10 Years and Select are 40%. Quarter Cask, Lore, and 10 Sherry Oak are 48%. The 10 Years Cask Strength is bottled at cask strength, around 58%; the exact percentage varies by batch.
How do you pronounce Laphroaig?
Roughly "la-FROJG," with the stress on the second syllable. The name comes from Scottish Gaelic and means something like "the beautiful hollow by the broad bay."
Why does Laphroaig taste like smoke and a hospital?
The barley is dried over peat fires, which infuses the whisky with smoky compounds (phenols). Islay peat contains a lot of seaweed and moss, giving it its characteristic iodine and "medicinal" aroma. Laphroaig uses heavily peated barley, giving it one of Scotland's most distinctive flavors.
What's the difference between Laphroaig 10 and Quarter Cask?
The 10 Years matures for ten years in regular ex-bourbon casks and is 40%. The Quarter Cask has no age statement, is finished in small quarter casks (more contact with the wood), and is bottled at 48%. It's fuller, sweeter, and woodier, with just as much smoke.
Is Laphroaig suitable for beginners?
As a first whisky, it's a gamble: many people find the smoke too intense at first. If you want to get to know Islay, start with the Select or drink the 10 Years with a few drops of water. Once you're won over, you often won't want anything else.
Which Laphroaig is best as a gift?
Laphroaig Lore or the 10 Years Sherry Oak: both are richer and more complex than the standard 10, and come in attractive packaging. For a true enthusiast, the 10 Years Cask Strength is a classic. For a gift under 50 euros, the 10 Years itself is the safest choice.
