What is Patrón?

Tequila still made with a stone wheel

Patrón has been made since 1989 at Hacienda Patrón in Atotonilco el Alto, in the highlands of Jalisco. The brand made its name by doing something unusual in the tequila world: the agaves are not steamed in an autoclave, but slowly cooked in brick ovens, and some of the juice is still pressed with a tahona, a ton-heavy volcanic stone wheel that crushes the cooked agave.

That tahona juice is blended with juice from a modern roller mill, and the two distillates together give Patrón its character: the wheel brings earthy, sweet depth, while the mill adds freshness and citrus. Everything is made from 100% blue Weber agave, bottled at 40%, and every bottle is hand-finished, numbered, and sealed with beeswax. In 2018, Bacardi acquired the brand.

What does Patrón taste like?

Cooked agave, citrus, and black pepper

Nose

Sweet agave & citrus

Sweet cooked agave up front, with citrus peel, green herbs, and a hint of black pepper. The Añejo adds vanilla and dried fruit.

Palate

Full-bodied and slightly peppery

Fuller and earthier than many tequilas, with a distinct agave flavor and a pleasant peppery edge. The tahona portion gives it extra body.

Finish

Clean and dry

A dry, clean finish with pepper and citrus. The Reposado and Añejo finish rounder, with vanilla and oak.

Sweet 3/5
Spicy 3/5
Fruity 3/5
Strength 3/5

Flavor profile of Patrón Silver. The Reposado scores higher in sweetness, while the Añejo scores higher in sweetness and spice; El Cielo is the smoothest and most floral.

How to drink it

Three ways to drink Patrón

A 100% agave tequila needs no salt or lime: that’s a custom associated with cheap mixto tequila. Take small sips at room temperature.

Neat, without salt and lime

1.35 fl oz in a narrow tasting or shot glass. Let it linger in your mouth before swallowing: that way, you taste the cooked agave and pepper, not just alcohol.

As a Margarita

Shake 50 ml Patrón Silver, 25 ml fresh lime juice, and 20 ml triple sec hard with ice, then strain into a margarita glass with a half salt rim. Using fresh lime instead of mix makes a huge difference.

As a Paloma

50 ml Patrón Silver with grapefruit soda, a squeeze of lime, and plenty of ice in a highball glass with a salt rim. The most popular tequila cocktail in Mexico, and much more refreshing than a Margarita.

The right glass for Patrón

A narrow tasting glass for sipping neat, a tumbler for Reposado on the rocks, a margarita glass for the Margarita, and a highball glass for the Paloma. These are the glasses we recommend ourselves.

What percentage alcohol does Patrón contain?
All the Patrón bottles you'll find here are 40% ABV: Silver, Reposado, Añejo and El Cielo.
What is a tahona, and why does Patrón use one?
A tahona is a ton-heavy wheel made of volcanic rock that crushes cooked agave to extract the juice. It's slow and labor-intensive, but produces earthier, sweeter juice. Patrón blends this with juice from a modern roller mill.
What's the difference between Silver, Reposado and Añejo?
The aging. Silver is unaged and therefore the freshest, Reposado rests in oak for over two months and develops vanilla and caramel notes, while Añejo ages for over a year, turning amber-colored, rounder and woodier.
Should you drink Patrón with salt and lime?
No. Salt and lime were originally used to mask the harshness of cheap mixto tequila. Patrón is 100% agave and is perfectly good to drink neat, in small sips at room temperature.
Which Patrón is best for a Margarita?
Silver. It's fresh and citrusy, letting the lime shine. Reposado also works, but gives you a rounder, woodier Margarita.
Is Patrón 100% agave?
Yes. Only blue Weber agave from the highlands of Jalisco is used, with no added sugars. This must also be stated on the label: '100% de agave'.
