Meursault
Meursault is a wine village in Burgundy, in the Côte de Beaune, and the name of the white wine made there. It is chardonnay in a rich style: full, creamy and buttery, with notes of hazelnut and vanilla.
Meursault and its neighbours
Meursault is one of Burgundy's best-known white wines. We have a dedicated page about the region, the grape and related white wines.

About dry white wine →A village, a grape and a rich style
In Burgundy, everything revolves around origin: the more precisely the place is identified on the label, the higher the wine is valued. Meursault is a village appellation, named after the village south of Beaune, in the Côte de Beaune. It lies between well-known neighbours such as Volnay and Puligny-Montrachet. Almost all Meursault is white and made from chardonnay. A small amount of red Meursault made from pinot noir also exists, but it is rarely seen.
Meursault has no grand cru, but it does have a series of premier crus, such as Les Perrières, Les Charmes and Les Genevrières. Those names appear on the label next to the word Meursault. The style is typically defined by the wine often fermenting and maturing in oak barrels, then resting on its lees for a while. This makes it full, creamy and rich, with notes of butter, hazelnut and toasted bread. The Meursault sold by Gall & Gall comes from Joseph Drouhin, a well-known winery in Beaune.
In brief
Meursault at Gall & Gall
Gall & Gall has one Meursault: Joseph Drouhin’s. If you’re looking for a different style of Chardonnay from Burgundy, also look at Chablis, which is crisper and fresher.

Joseph Drouhin Meursault
A typical Meursault: rich, full-bodied and buttery, with hazelnut and vanilla. Drouhin makes it in the village that may well be the most famous in the Côte de Beaune.
Chablis is also Chardonnay from Burgundy, from the cooler north. Crisp, mineral and usually unoaked.
Chardonnay grows all over the world. On our Chardonnay page, you can read how climate and oak change the flavor.
Butter, hazelnut and ripe yellow fruit
Hazelnut & vanilla
Ripe yellow apple, pear, citrus and sometimes a little peach, with hazelnut, vanilla and toasted bread from the oak.
Full and creamy
Meursault feels broad and creamy, with soft acidity that keeps its richness in balance.
Long and nutty
Notes of nuts, butter and some minerality linger for a long time. After a few years in the bottle, honey and greater depth develop.
Typical flavor profile of a Meursault. Chablis scores higher on freshness and lower on intensity.
How to serve Meursault
Chilled but not ice-cold, in a large glass, and with food.
At 11 to 13 degrees
A full-bodied white like Meursault should be served less cold than a crisp white wine. Take it out of the fridge about twenty minutes before serving. If it’s too cold, you’ll barely taste the oak and creaminess.
More about wine temperature →Room in the glass
Meursault needs a glass with a generous bowl so its aromas can develop. Don’t pour too full, so you can swirl it.
To the glasses →Store or drink now
Meursault is often at its best after a few years and can then age for several more years. Store the bottle on its side, somewhere cool and dark.
To the bottle →Meursault at the table
A rich white wine calls for rich food: shellfish, cream, butter and poultry.
Lobster and scallops
Lobster, langoustines, scallops and prawns in butter.
With a creamy sauce
Turbot, salmon or cod with beurre blanc or a creamy sauce.
Chicken and veal
Chicken with mushrooms or cream sauce, guinea fowl or veal.
Nutty cheeses
Comté, aged Gruyère and other nutty cheeses.
