What is Smirnoff?

From Moscow to the rest of the world

Smirnoff dates back to the distillery that Pyotr Smirnov started in Moscow in 1864. After the Russian Revolution, the family took the recipe west. Smirnoff has been made outside Russia since the 1930s, and the brand is now owned by Diageo. For decades, no vodka has sold better anywhere in the world.

The regular bottle is called Smirnoff No. 21, the one with the red label. It is distilled three times and filtered ten times through charcoal. What remains is a neutral, clean 37.5% vodka that works in almost any cocktail. There are also flavored varieties and the ready-to-drink mixed beverage Smirnoff Ice.

What does Smirnoff taste like?

Neutral, clean and smooth-tasting

Nose

Almost odorless

Good vodka has almost no smell. At most, a little grain and a slight bite from the alcohol.

Palate

Smooth and clean

Slightly sweet from the grain, smooth and without harsh edges. That’s what you want in a vodka for cocktails.

Finish

Short and dry

Short and clean warmth, with no aftertaste. This leaves room for the other ingredients in your cocktail.

Sweet 1/5
Fruity 1/5
Spicy 1/5
Strength 3/5

This is what Smirnoff No. 21 tastes like. The flavored varieties are sweeter and fruitier, and Smirnoff Ice is a light premixed drink.

How to drink it

How to drink Smirnoff

You can mix Smirnoff with almost anything, which is why vodka features in so many cocktails. Drink it neat and ice-cold. When mixed, always add plenty of ice.

Ice-cold as a shot

Put the bottle in the freezer and pour 2 to 4 cl into a shot glass. Ice-cold vodka becomes thick and smooth. That’s how they drink it in Russia and Poland.

What percentage of alcohol is in Smirnoff vodka?
The alcohol percentage of Smirnoff depends on the bottle. No. 21 and Vanilla have an alcohol content of 37.5%. The fruit flavors are lighter. Raspberry Crush and Mango & Passionfruit are 25%, while Miami Peach is 35%. Smirnoff Ice is a 4% mixed drink.
Is Smirnoff Russian?
Pyotr Smirnov started the brand in Moscow in 1864, but it has been made outside Russia since the 1930s. Today, Smirnoff is owned by British company Diageo, and the vodka comes from the United Kingdom, Ireland, Italy, and other countries.
What is Smirnoff made from?
Made from grain. The vodka is distilled three times and then filtered over charcoal ten times. This removes almost all the aromas and flavors, leaving you with a neutral, clean vodka.
What do you mix Smirnoff with?
Drink it neat, ice-cold from the freezer, as a shot. You can also mix Smirnoff with plenty of ice in a Moscow Mule, Cosmopolitan, or Espresso Martini, or simply with orange juice, tonic, or cranberry juice. We don’t recommend drinking it neat at room temperature.
What is the difference between Smirnoff and Smirnoff Ice?
Smirnoff is pure vodka at 37.5%. Smirnoff Ice is a ready-to-drink mixed beverage with vodka and lime flavor. Smirnoff Ice has an alcohol content of just 4%, about the same as a beer. Drink it chilled straight from the bottle or in a highball glass with ice.
How long does an opened bottle of Smirnoff keep?
Indefinitely, as long as the cap is tightly closed. Vodka does not spoil and its flavor barely changes. The fruity varieties contain sugar and flavorings. After opening, it’s best to drink them within a year.
