What is Grey Goose?

Vodka made the way the French make cognac

Grey Goose is a French vodka created in 1997 by American drinks importer Sidney Frank and developed by cellarmaster François Thibault, a cognac maker by trade. The vodka is distilled from soft winter wheat from Picardy and blended with spring water from Gensac-la-Pallue, in the heart of the Cognac region.

That French approach, using bakery-quality wheat and limestone-filtered water, makes Grey Goose smoother and rounder than most vodkas. The brand became the standard for premium vodka in cocktail bars and has been part of Bacardi since 2004. Alongside the Original, there are lemon- and pear-flavored varieties.

How to drink it

Three ways to drink Grey Goose

A premium vodka deserves more than a mix with orange juice. Chilled, neat or in a classic cocktail, Grey Goose is at its best.

Grey Goose Martini

60 ml Grey Goose and 10 ml dry vermouth, stirred with plenty of ice and strained into an ice-cold martini glass. Garnish with a lemon twist or an olive.

Neat, lightly chilled

Unlike most vodkas, Grey Goose doesn't need to be kept in the freezer: at around 10 degrees, you can best taste the wheat and gentle sweetness. Pour 30 ml into a small glass.

Glass: Nick & Nora →

Le Grand Fizz

45 ml Grey Goose, 15 ml elderflower liqueur, juice of half a lime and soda in a large wine glass filled with ice. The brand's signature recipe, fresh and summery.

What percentage alcohol is Grey Goose?
Grey Goose contains 40% alcohol, as do the flavored varieties Le Citron and La Poire. That's slightly more than Smirnoff or Absolut (37.5% to 40%), but typical for a premium vodka.
What is Grey Goose made from?
Made from soft winter wheat from Picardy in northern France, the same wheat French bakers use. The wheat is distilled in Picardy, and the vodka is blended with filtered spring water in Gensac-la-Pallue, in the Cognac region.
Is Grey Goose better than regular vodka?
Grey Goose is smoother and rounder than most standard vodkas, with a subtle sweetness from the wheat and a creamy texture. You can taste the difference clearly in a Martini or neat; in a long drink with lots of juice or cola, it largely disappears.
What's the best way to drink Grey Goose?
Neat and lightly chilled (around 10 degrees, not from the freezer), in a Vodka Martini or Espresso Martini, or in a Le Grand Fizz with elderflower liqueur and soda. Always use plenty of ice and a chilled glass.
What is Grey Goose Nightvision?
A limited edition of the Original in a bottle with built-in lighting that glows in the dark. The vodka is exactly the same; it's all about the bottle, designed as a gift or a standout display piece for the bar.
How long does an opened bottle of Grey Goose last?
Indefinitely, as long as the bottle is tightly sealed. Vodka doesn't spoil and its flavor barely changes. The flavored varieties taste best within a year of opening.
