Royal Leerdam Starla

The 35 cl tumbler is the size that handles almost everything: water, soft drinks, juice, and with ice in it a cocktail too. The 27 cl long drink glass is narrower and taller and comes in twelves, which makes it right for a birthday or a buffet where you would rather not wash up halfway through. Mix colours in moderation: four coloured tumblers among six clear ones gives a table character without looking untidy. You will find more shapes in the same category among the tumbler glasses.

For water you do not have to measure anything, but as soon as a cocktail goes in, the size does matter. A gin and tonic with plenty of ice fits in 35 cl, provided you really fill the glass with ice to the top. A mojito is better built in the narrower long drink glass: mint and lime at the bottom, crushed ice on top, then top it up. In coloured glass the colour of the drink does fade a little, so serve the things there where that does not matter.

Starla stacks, and that is exactly where it goes wrong if you get too enthusiastic. Two or three glasses inside each other is safe; above that they can suck together. If a pair does get stuck, stand the bottom glass in lukewarm water and put cold water in the top one, and they will let go. Otherwise the whole range simply goes in the dishwasher, on a short glass programme.
