SPIEGELAU Lounge 2.0

Lounge 2.0 is Spiegelau’s stemless series: two highball glasses, two tumblers, and a shot glass. They all have a thick base, making the glasses feel heavier in the hand than their contents would suggest and preventing them from tipping over when someone brushes past the bar.

The sizes are quite similar, with capacities of 23.8 and 30.9 cl for the tumblers and 24.7 and 30.5 cl for the highball glasses. This lets you choose how much ice to add to each drink, which affects how quickly it becomes diluted. All items come in packs of twelve.

Two heights, two sizes per height

The low glasses are tumblers in old fashioned style. The 23.8 cl is meant for spirits neat or with a single block of ice, the 30.9 cl gives room to a large block that melts slowly and so dilutes your drink less. At the old fashioned glasses you can see how those sizes relate to other series. The tall glasses work the same way: 24.7 cl for a short mixed drink and 30.5 cl for a full gin and tonic with plenty of ice. The 5.5 cl shot glass is a little more generous than a classic 3.5 cl measure. Compare if you like at the long drink glasses.

Building the drink in the glass

Stemless glasses are made for drinks you build straight in the glass. Fill with ice first, then the spirit, then the mixer along the wall so you do not pour the bubbles to death. A gin and tonic and a moscow mule go into the 30.5 cl that way. An old fashioned is stirred in a mixing glass and strained over a fresh block in the low tumbler, because half-melted ice waters down the rest of your glass.

Thick base, thin rim

A heavy base and a thin rim call for attention when temperatures differ. Do not fill a glass straight from the dishwasher with ice, because the base reacts more slowly than the wall. Beyond that this series is straightforward: lead-free crystal glass, dishwasher safe on a short programme and without a stem that can break. Do place the glasses separately in the rack.

More stemless glassware

All the low stemless models are together under the tumbler glasses, where you will also find the heavier whisky versions with a solid base. The small sizes for spirits are with the shot glasses, from Boston shots to little footed measures. And the other series from this brand, including the wine bowls of Salute and the four bowls of Hybrid, are together under Spiegelau.
