What is Chivas Regal?

A blend with Strathisla at its heart

Chivas Regal is a blended Scotch whisky from Chivas Brothers, which began as a grocery shop in Aberdeen in 1801. The brothers James and John Chivas blended whiskies for their customers and supplied Queen Victoria. The first Chivas Regal went on sale in 1909, a 25-year-old blend for the American market. The 12 Years followed in 1939 and became the best known.

At the heart of every Chivas Regal is Strathisla, the oldest continuously operating distillery in the Highlands, in Keith in Speyside. Around it are dozens of malt and grain whiskies. The result is smooth, rounded and fruity: honey, apple and vanilla. Chivas Regal is part of Pernod Ricard and one of the best-selling Scotch whiskies in the world.

How to drink it

Three ways to drink Chivas Regal

Chivas is a blend that can do it all: neat, on the rocks or in a simple highball. The older bottles deserve a tasting glass, not ice.

On the rocks

Pour 50 ml of Chivas 12 into a tumbler over one large ice cube. The ice softens and opens up the whisky without diluting it too quickly. The classic way.

Glass: tumbler →

Chivas highball

50 ml Chivas with 150 ml soda water or ginger ale in a longdrink glass filled with ice, garnished with an orange zest. Light, refreshing and the way Chivas is enjoyed in Asia.

Highball recipe →

Neat, in a tasting glass

For the XV, 18 or 25: 30 ml in a tulip-shaped tasting glass at room temperature, without ice. Swirl, smell and take small sips. A drop of water is fine.

What percentage alcohol is Chivas Regal?
All regular Chivas Regals, from the 12 Years to the 25 Years, are 40% alcohol. The XV, Extra 13 and Mizunara are also 40%.
What does 12 Years mean for Chivas Regal?
The youngest whisky in the blend has spent at least twelve years in casks. A blend contains dozens of whiskies, so some are older. With the 18 Years, the youngest component is eighteen years old, and so on.
What's the difference between Chivas Regal 12 and 18?
The 18 is richer, sweeter, and more complex, with dried fruit, chocolate, and a longer finish, and contains older whiskies. The 12 is lighter and fruitier, with honey and apple, and is intended for drinking on the rocks and in cocktails. The price is usually two to three times higher.
Is Chivas Regal a single malt?
No, it's a blended Scotch: a mix of malt whiskies and grain whisky from different distilleries. Its heart is the Strathisla single malt. If you'd like a single malt from the same stable, look at Strathisla itself or The Glenlivet, also from Pernod Ricard.
Chivas Regal or Johnnie Walker?
Both are 40% Scotch blends. Chivas (Speyside) is smoother, sweeter, and fruitier, with no smoke. Johnnie Walker Black Label has a light smoky note and is a little drier and fuller-bodied. If you like smooth and rounded, choose Chivas; if you like a little smoke, choose Johnnie Walker.
How do you store an opened bottle of Chivas?
Store upright, tightly sealed, in a cool, dark place. Whisky no longer ages in the bottle and doesn't spoil, but a bottle that's less than a quarter full slowly loses its aroma due to the air inside. Drink it within a year.
