What is The Famous Grouse?

The whisky the Scots drink themselves

The Famous Grouse was created in 1896 by Matthew Gloag, a wine and whisky merchant in Perth, as 'The Grouse Brand'. The red grouse on the label, drawn by his daughter, refers to the game bird of the Scottish Highlands. As customers kept asking for 'the famous grouse', that became the official name in 1905. Since 1980, it has been Scotland's best-selling whisky, and the brand belongs to Edrington, which also owns The Macallan and Highland Park.

Those two single malts also form the heart of the blend, complemented by other malts and grain whiskies. The result is a soft, balanced blend with honey, orange and a hint of oak: easy to enjoy neat, great on the rocks and perfect for mixing. Alongside the classic 'Finest' are the smoky Smoky Black, the Sherry Cask Finish and the blended malt Naked Malt, formerly known as The Naked Grouse.

Three ways to drink The Famous Grouse

The Finest is an all-rounder: neat, on the rocks, or mixed. The brand itself recommends it with ginger ale.

On the rocks

50 ml Famous Grouse over a few ice cubes in a tumbler. Simple and refreshing; the ice makes the blend even smoother.

Neat, the Smoky Black

30 ml of Smoky Black or Naked Malt in a tulip-shaped tasting glass, at room temperature. Let it breathe for a moment and smell the smoke or sherry. That's how you taste what a blend can do.

What percentage alcohol is in The Famous Grouse?
The Famous Grouse Finest contains 40% alcohol, as do Smoky Black, Sherry Cask Finish, and Naked Malt. The 1-liter and 4.5-liter bottles are also 40%.
Which whiskies are in The Famous Grouse?
The heart of the blend is the single malts from The Macallan and Highland Park, both owned by the same company (Edrington), along with other malt and grain whiskies. Naked Malt is a blend of malts only, with no grain whisky.
What's the difference between The Famous Grouse and Smoky Black?
Finest is soft and light, with honey and orange. Smoky Black (formerly The Black Grouse) contains a generous amount of peated malt, making it smoky and warmer, but still softer than an Islay whisky like Laphroaig. Choose Finest for mixing, and Smoky Black neat or for a Penicillin.
Is Naked Malt from The Famous Grouse?
Yes and no. Naked Malt was called The Naked Grouse until 2021 and was part of the Famous Grouse family. Since the name change, it has stood on its own, but it's still made by Edrington. It's a blended malt, finished for six months in first-fill sherry casks.
Famous Grouse or Johnnie Walker?
Both are 40% Scottish blends. Famous Grouse Finest is softer and sweeter, with honey and orange; Johnnie Walker Red Label is spicier and smokier. They're interchangeable in whisky and cola or ginger ale; neat, Grouse is the milder choice.
Where does the name come from?
Named after the red grouse, the game bird of the Scottish Highlands. In 1896, Matthew Gloag named his blend 'The Grouse Brand'; because customers kept asking for it as 'the famous grouse', it became the brand name in 1905. The bird on the label was drawn by Gloag's daughter, Philippa.
