What is Jameson?

Triple distilled, twice as smooth

Jameson was founded in 1780 by John Jameson on Bow Street in Dublin. His motto, 'Sine metu' (without fear), is still on the label today. Since 1975, Jameson has been distilled in Midleton, County Cork, at one of Europe's largest distilleries. The brand belongs to Irish Distillers, part of Pernod Ricard, and is by far the world's best-selling Irish whiskey.

Jameson is a blend of pot still whiskey (made from malted and unmalted barley) and grain whiskey, triple distilled and aged for at least four years in ex-bourbon and sherry casks. Triple distillation makes it exceptionally smooth, with notes of vanilla, green apple, honey and a hint of spice, without any smoke. Alongside the Original, there are Black Barrel, the Caskmates editions aged in beer casks, the fruity Jameson Orange and the 18 Years.

How to drink it

Three ways to drink Jameson

Jameson is the most versatile whiskey in the bar: smooth enough to drink neat, light enough for mixing, and the perfect base for an Irish coffee.

Jameson ginger & lime

50 ml Jameson with 150 ml ginger ale in a highball glass full of ice, with a lime wedge squeezed in. The brand’s signature serve and the easiest whiskey cocktail there is.

Glass: highball glass →

Irish coffee

40 ml Jameson and two teaspoons of brown sugar in a glass of hot coffee, topped with a layer of lightly whipped cream. Don’t stir: drink the coffee through the cream.

Neat or on the rocks

50 ml Jameson in a tumbler, neat or over a large ice cube. Black Barrel and Caskmates Stout are best enjoyed this way.

What percentage alcohol is Jameson?
Jameson Original contains 40% alcohol, as do Black Barrel and the Caskmates Stout and IPA Editions. Jameson Orange is a flavored whiskey at 30%. The 18 Years is bottled at 46%.
What's the difference between Irish whiskey and Scotch?
Irish whiskey is usually distilled three times (Scotch twice) and rarely dried with peat, which makes it smoother and lighter, with no smoke. In Irish, “whiskey” is spelled with an e. Jameson also uses pot still whiskey made from both malted and unmalted barley, which gives it a slightly spicy note.
What is Jameson Black Barrel?
A Jameson with a higher proportion of pot still whiskey and small-batch grain whiskey, matured in bourbon casks that have been charred twice. This gives it more toffee, nut and vanilla notes and a richer, sweeter flavor than the Original. It's meant to be enjoyed neat or in an Old Fashioned.
What is Jameson Caskmates?
Jameson that spends some additional time maturing in casks that previously held beer. The Stout Edition matures in Irish stout casks, gaining cocoa and coffee notes; the IPA Edition matures in IPA casks and is fresher and hoppier. The idea came from a trade with a brewery in Cork, which used Jameson casks for its beer.
What's the best way to drink Jameson?
The brand itself swears by Jameson Ginger & Lime: whiskey with ginger ale and a lime wedge in a long glass full of ice. The Original is also great neat or on the rocks, and it's the classic choice in an Irish coffee. Drink Black Barrel and 18 Years neat.
Jameson or Jack Daniel's?
Both are smooth, popular whiskeys, but Jameson is an Irish blend, triple distilled, light and fruity with green apple notes. Jack Daniel's is an American Tennessee whiskey made mostly from corn, filtered through charcoal, sweeter and full of caramel and vanilla notes. Jack Daniel's is the classic choice for cola; Jameson is great with ginger ale and in Irish coffee.
