What is Jim Beam Double Oak?

Two barrels, twice the wood

Every bourbon ages in a new, charred oak barrel. Jim Beam Double Oak does this twice: after the first aging, the bourbon is transferred to a second, new, charred white oak barrel. The fresh wood adds a second dose of everything bourbon is known for.

You can taste it: a rich, spicy note of toasted wood, complemented by deep, smooth aromas of caramel and toffee. Double Oak is bottled at 43%, just like Black. Black gets its depth from extra years; Double Oak gets it from extra wood.

How to drink it

Three ways to drink Double Oak

Neat or over ice best showcases the double maturation. For a mixed drink, make the Oak Fashioned.

Oak Fashioned

Stir 50 ml Double Oak, 5 ml sugar syrup, and 2 dashes of Angostura bitters with ice in a tumbler. Pour over a large ice cube and squeeze a lemon peel over the top.

Over ice

50 ml over a few large ice cubes. The melting ice softens the oak and lets the caramel and toffee shine through.

Neat alongside Black

Pour 20 ml of Double Oak and 20 ml of Jim Beam Black into two tasting glasses and taste them side by side. You'll notice the difference between extra years and extra oak.

Everything about Jim Beam →
What percentage alcohol is Jim Beam Double Oak?
Jim Beam Double Oak contains 43% alcohol, like Jim Beam Black. White Label is 40%.
What does Double Oak mean?
It means the bourbon is aged in two new charred white oak barrels: first in one barrel, then in a second, fresh barrel. This gives it more oak, caramel, and toffee notes.
What's the difference between Double Oak and Jim Beam Black?
Both are 43%, but they develop their fuller character in different ways. Black gets four extra years of aging; Double Oak is aged successively in two new charred barrels and is woodier and spicier.
How do you drink Jim Beam Double Oak?
Drink it neat or on the rocks to appreciate the rich flavor of the double aging. If you want to mix it, make an Oak Fashioned: an Old Fashioned with Double Oak and a lemon peel.
Is Double Oak suitable for bourbon and cola?
You can, but you'll largely lose the oak and toffee notes. White Label is a better choice for long drinks; save Double Oak for sipping neat and for stirred cocktails.
