Moët & Chandon Nectar Impérial

The house’s sweet bottle, with 40 to 45 grams of sugar per liter. That’s about nine times as much as in the vintage champagne, making this a bottle for dessert rather than for an aperitif.

What is Moët & Chandon Nectar Impérial?

Nine times as much sugar as the vintage

Nectar Impérial is Moët & Chandon’s demi-sec: a champagne with 40 to 45 grams of sugar per liter. That figure tells you more than any tasting note, because the Grand Vintage from the same house has 5 grams per liter. That’s almost nine times as much sugar, and it changes not only the taste but also the occasion for opening the bottle.

The blend consists of 40 to 50 percent Pinot Noir, 30 to 40 percent Meunier and 10 to 20 percent Chardonnay, from Champagne in France. Like all bottles from the house, it has an alcohol content of 12.5%. Its intense golden-yellow color immediately shows that this isn’t a crisp aperitif champagne.

What does Moët & Chandon Nectar Impérial taste like?

Pineapple, passion fruit and a hint of vanilla

Nose

Golden-yellow with vanilla

Intense golden-yellow in the glass, with tropical fruit and a subtle hint of vanilla on the nose. Grapefruit and apricot also come through.

Palate

Slightly sweet and sensual

Pineapple and passion fruit alongside stone fruit, slightly sweet and almost sensual in texture. You can taste the sugar, but it doesn’t coat the palate.

Finish

Fresh despite its richness

Where you might expect a syrupy finish after so much sugar, this one stays fresh. That’s exactly what makes it work alongside a fruit dessert.

The flavor profile of Nectar Impérial served neat. With a dessert that's already sweet, the champagne's freshness comes through even more.

How to drink it

Nectar Impérial with dessert

A demi-sec should be served cold, because the chill keeps the sugar in check. Chill the bottle to 8 to 10 degrees and pour smaller servings so the last little bit isn't sitting lukewarm in the glass.

With fruit desserts

Pour about 10 cl alongside a dessert with pineapple, mango, or apricot. The rule is simple: the glass must be at least as sweet as the plate, or the champagne will taste sour.

As a sweet aperitif

Not everyone likes dry wine. Pour 10 cl into a white wine glass for guests who find a crisp brut too harsh; this gives the vanilla and tropical fruit the most room.

Sgroppino

Loosen 80 grams of lemon sorbet, mix with 20 ml of vodka, and top up with 60 ml of Nectar Impérial. The demi-sec makes it softer and rounder than with a brut.

The right glass for a demi-sec

A flute keeps the bubbles in for longer, which is nice with a sweet champagne because the mousse keeps the sugar light. If you really want to smell the vanilla and tropical fruit, a white wine glass gives them more room.

Everything about Moët & Chandon →
What is the alcohol percentage in Nectar Impérial?
12.5%, the same as Moët & Chandon's other bottles. So the fact that a champagne tastes sweeter doesn't mean it has less or more alcohol.
Exactly how sweet is Nectar Impérial?
It contains 40 to 45 grams of sugar per liter, placing it in the demi-sec category. By comparison, the Grand Vintage from the same house contains 5 grams per liter.
What is the difference between Nectar Impérial and Brut Impérial?
The main difference is the dosage. Brut Impérial is dry, with green apple and citrus notes; Nectar Impérial is demi-sec, with tropical fruit, stone fruit, and vanilla. The grape blend also differs: Nectar has more Pinot Noir and less Chardonnay.
What goes well with Nectar Impérial?
With fruit desserts featuring pineapple, mango, or apricot, and as the sweet finish to a festive meal. It also works as an aperitif, especially if your guests find dry champagne too austere.
Which glass is best?
A flute works well because the bubbles keep the sweetness light. If you want to enjoy more of the pineapple and vanilla aromas, choose a white wine glass or a tulip-shaped champagne glass.
