Mudslide cocktail recipe
for your table
Drizzle chocolate sauce in a spiral around the inside of the glass, then chill the glass.
Add the vodka, coffee liqueur, and Baileys to the shaker with plenty of ice.
Shake for 10 seconds. No longer, as the cream will curdle if you shake it for too long.
Strain it into the glass over fresh ice. For a frozen version, blend everything with a cup of crushed ice.

The story
The story goes that the Mudslide was created in the 1970s at the Rum Point Club in the Cayman Islands. It was a beach bar that wanted its own cream cocktail that could stand up to the heat. Baileys came onto the market in 1974, completing the recipe. The name comes from its color: muddy brown, thick and flowing like a mudslide. It didn't really take off until the 1990s, in American chain restaurants. Blended with ice and buried under whipped cream, from then on it was more of a dessert than a cocktail. If you'd rather stick to regular cream, try the White Russian.
The right glass
We prefer to serve the Mudslide in a 44 cl hurricane glass, especially the frozen version. The wide bowl easily holds the thick, blended mixture, and the curved shape lets you see the chocolate swirl along the sides. If you're making the simple version over ice, a tumbler will also work. You just miss out on the showmanship that makes this cocktail so much fun. Choose clear, colorless glass. The light brown against the dark chocolate is what it's all about.

The right tools
For a Mudslide, besides the glass, you'll need a shaker, a jigger for precise measuring, and glass straws. These are the bar tools we use ourselves; you'll find everything in our bar tools & cocktail sets.
Glassware set (our pick 01) + 3 bar tools together € 90,80.
Variations & twists
Blend in two scoops of vanilla ice cream for the dessert version that made it famous. Use rum instead of vodka for a smoother drink. Or add a shot of espresso for a drink that comes close to an Espresso Martini. Leave out the vodka and you'll have a Baileys cocktail. Find more ideas in all cocktail recipes.
Serving tip
Make a chocolate spiral inside the glass, then put it in the freezer for five minutes. The sauce will harden against the sides and won't run when you pour. Shake briefly and chill, because cream liqueur can curdle if you shake it for too long. Never add citrus. If you're making the frozen version, don't blend for more than 15 seconds. Otherwise, the mixture will get warm and thin.
Frequently asked questions
What glass do you use for a Mudslide?
In a 44 cl hurricane glass, especially if you're making it frozen. Take a look at our hurricane glasses.
What's the difference between it and a White Russian?
A White Russian is made with cream or milk, while a Mudslide contains Baileys. That makes the Mudslide sweeter, thicker, and stronger.
Frozen or over ice?
Either works. Served over ice, it's a cocktail. Blended with ice and a scoop of vanilla ice cream, it becomes a dessert. Choose what suits the occasion.
Can you make a Mudslide alcohol-free?
Yes. Use alcohol-free Irish cream, cold strong coffee, and a splash of vanilla syrup. Blend it with ice and a scoop of vanilla ice cream, and you really won't miss a thing.
