What is Safari?

Tropical liqueur from the Netherlands, since 1984

Safari is an orange liqueur that tastes of exotic fruit: passion fruit, mango, papaya, and a little citrus. It has 20% alcohol, so it’s stronger than a mixed drink but lighter than most liqueurs. That’s what it’s made for, too. Safari is almost always mixed with orange juice, 7-Up, or tonic. The liqueur was launched in the Netherlands in 1984 and is now owned by Diageo. You’ll still see the bottle everywhere in bars and at student parties in the Netherlands and Belgium.

Safari is often mentioned alongside Pisang Ambon and Passoã. Bright colors, tropical fruit, and made for simple, fruity long drinks. Of the three, Safari is the most of a blend of different fruits. Many people say it tastes like tropical lemonade.

How to drink it

Three ways to drink Safari

Safari should be served cold and over ice. Chill the bottle in the refrigerator and use plenty of ice cubes.

Safari orange juice

A long drink glass full of ice, 50 ml Safari, and 150 ml orange juice. This is the classic. Sweet, tropical, and completely orange.

Glass: long drink glass →

Safari 7-Up

Pour 50 ml Safari and 150 ml 7-Up or Sprite into a long drink glass filled with ice, then squeeze a lime wedge over it. Lighter and fresher than with orange juice.

Ice-cold as a shot

Pour 2 to 4 cl from the freezer into a shot glass. Sweet, fruity, and smooth. The sugar keeps the bottle from freezing.

Recipe

How to make Safari orange juice, step by step

Safari with orange juice is by far the best-known mix. Get the proportions right and fill the glass with ice, and you’ll taste fresh fruit, not sugar.

What you need

5 cl Safari
15 cl cold orange juice
A long drink glass full of ice cubes
Half an orange slice

How to make it

1. Chill the bottle of Safari and the juice in the refrigerator for at least an hour.
2. Fill a 30 to 40 cl highball glass completely with ice.
3. Pour the Safari over the ice first, then the orange juice.
4. Stir from the bottom up two or three times.
5. Place half an orange slice on the rim and serve immediately.

Tip

We use one part Safari to three parts juice. If it's too sweet for your taste, use one part Safari to four parts juice, or replace a third of the juice with sparkling water. Making it for a group? Mix 25 cl Safari with 75 cl juice in a pitcher and add the ice to the glasses just before serving. Browse our highball glasses.

Questions about Safari

What is the alcohol percentage in Safari?
Safari is 20% ABV. Passoã and Pisang Ambon are both 17% ABV, so Safari is slightly stronger. Compared with vodka or rum, it's about half as strong. In a glass with orange juice or 7-Up, it comes to around 5% ABV.
What does Safari taste like?
It tastes like a mix of exotic fruits: passion fruit, mango, and papaya with a little citrus. Sweet and tropical, a bit like a fruit cocktail. It's bright orange.
What goes well with Safari?
Orange juice is the classic choice. 7-Up or Sprite, tonic, pineapple juice, and soda also work well. Add a splash of vodka if you want a stronger highball. It also works well in a fruity cocktail like Sex on the Beach.
What's the difference between Safari, Pisang Ambon, and Passoã?
All three are tropical fruit liqueurs. Safari is 20% ABV, orange, and tastes of mixed exotic fruit. Pisang Ambon is 17% ABV, green, and tastes of banana and spices. Passoã is also 17% ABV, pinkish-red, and tastes of passion fruit, with a little more tartness. You can easily substitute one for another in a highball with orange juice.
Does Safari need to be refrigerated?
It's not necessary. It doesn't contain cream and won't spoil. It tastes best chilled, though, so it's best to put it in the fridge after opening. For shots, you can put the bottle in the freezer.
How long does an opened bottle of Safari keep?
If sealed and stored in a cool place, it will keep for years. The fruit flavor may become a little flat over time, but the liqueur won't spoil.
