Spiced rum named after a pirate
Captain Morgan is a spiced rum brand named after Sir Henry Morgan, the Welsh privateer who terrorized the Caribbean in the seventeenth century and later became governor of Jamaica. The brand was founded in 1944 by Seagram and is now part of Diageo. Its best-known bottle, Spiced Gold, is Caribbean rum aged in oak for at least a year and then flavored with vanilla, cinnamon, cloves, and caramel.
At 35% alcohol, Spiced Gold is milder than regular rum, and its sweet spices make it ideal for mixing. Captain Morgan and cola is one of the most frequently ordered long drinks in Dutch bars. Besides Spiced Gold, there is the stronger Black Spiced (40%), unspiced Dark Rum and White Rum, and fruity varieties such as Tiki and Sliced Apple.

Tropical version with pineapple and mango. Sweet and fruity, with soda or juice in a tiki glass.

Spiced rum with juicy apple and a hint of ginger. Fresh and light, delicious with ginger ale or tonic.

Sweet, warm and full of vanilla
Vanilla & cinnamon
Sweet vanilla, caramel and cinnamon, with a hint of clove and charred wood.
Smooth and sweet
Round and slightly syrupy, with vanilla and brown sugar. You can barely taste the 35% alcohol.
Warm and spicy
A short, warm finish of cinnamon and clove. Black Spiced is drier and lingers longer.

Three ways to drink Captain Morgan
Captain Morgan is made for mixing. It’s best known with cola, but ginger beer and a simple Old Fashioned bring out the spices better.

Mix 50 ml Spiced Gold with 150 ml cola in a highball glass filled with ice, and garnish with a lime wedge. The classic, often simply called “Captain cola” in the Netherlands.
