What is Schrobbelèr?

A Brabant herbal liqueur with 43 herbs

Schrobbelèr comes from Tilburg, where it has been made since 1965. The name refers to wool scouring: Tilburg was the Netherlands' textile city for centuries, and a 'schrobbelèr' was someone who carded raw wool. The liqueur is made from 43 herbs on a smooth base and contains 21.5% alcohol, considerably less than most herbal bitters.

That low alcohol percentage and sweet, smooth taste are precisely what make Schrobbelèr approachable. It is traditionally served ice-cold and neat, in a small glass, and is inseparably associated with carnival and the Tilburg fair in North Brabant. The recipe remains a secret and is kept within the company.

How to drink it

Three ways to drink Schrobbelèr

Schrobbelèr should be served ice-cold. Put the bottle in the freezer and pour small glasses; it makes the drink thicker and less sweet.

Ice-cold and neat

Pour 4 cl of ice-cold Schrobbelèr into a small shot glass. This is how it is done in Tilburg: neat, cold and in company. The cold suppresses the sweetness, leaving the herbs.

In coffee

A splash of Schrobbelèr in a cup of fresh coffee, optionally with a dollop of whipped cream. A Brabant-style café au lait for after dinner, without being too heavy.

Over vanilla ice cream

Two spoonfuls of Schrobbelèr over a scoop of vanilla ice cream. The spiced sweetness pairs surprisingly well with cream and vanilla; the quickest dessert there is.

What percentage of alcohol does Schrobbelèr contain?
Schrobbelèr contains 21.5% alcohol. That is low for a herbal liqueur: Jägermeister is 35% and Underberg is 44%. This makes Schrobbelèr much smoother and more approachable.
Where does the name Schrobbelèr come from?
From the process of carding wool. Tilburg was the Netherlands' textile city for centuries, and a wool carder used to card the raw wool there. The liqueur has been made in Tilburg since 1965 and bears this name as a nod to the city's history.
What is Schrobbelèr made from?
Made from 43 herbs on a smooth, lightly sweetened base. The exact recipe is a secret and is kept within the company. The result is sweet and herbal, with liquorice and spices, and much less bitter than a classic herbal bitter.
Should you drink Schrobbelèr cold?
Yes, that is the idea. Put the bottle in the refrigerator or in the freezer for a few hours; the cold makes the liqueur thicker and reduces the sweetness, allowing the herbs to come through more clearly. At room temperature, it is noticeably sweeter.
What is the difference between Schrobbelèr and Jägermeister?
Schrobbelèr comes from Tilburg, has an alcohol content of 21.5%, and is smooth and sweet, with 43 herbs. Jägermeister comes from Germany, has an alcohol content of 35%, and is much more bitter, with anise and liquorice. They are both served ice-cold, but Schrobbelèr is the milder of the two.
How long does an opened bottle of Schrobbelèr stay good?
Months to years. Due to its alcohol and sugar content, the liqueur does not spoil quickly. Store it in a dark, cool place; a bottle in the refrigerator or freezer is immediately at the right temperature for serving.
