Stroh
The Austrian rum synonymous with après-ski, with the notorious Stroh 80 as its best-known bottle. Here you can read about the different types, what it tastes like, how to make Jagertee, what you can bake with it, and which glass to drink it from.

The spiced rum from the Alps you know from mountain huts
Stroh is a spiced rum from Austria. Sebastian Stroh started making it in 1832 in Klagenfurt. It’s an Inländer-Rum, a rum made in Austria and flavored with a secret blend of spices and aromas. In the glass, it’s dark brown and sweet, with aromas of vanilla, caramel, and orange.
Stroh owes its name to Stroh 80. This rum with 80% alcohol is found in mountain huts in Jagertee and punch, and in Austrian kitchens it goes into strudel and Rumtopf. If you simply want to drink it, go for the milder Stroh rum 38. It’s also the bottle you’re most likely to find in the Netherlands.
In brief
What types of Stroh are there?
The number on the label is the alcohol percentage. The higher the number, the more you should dilute it or use it in the kitchen. The 38 is the bottle to drink.

Stroh 80
The famous overproof rum. Very sweet and spicy, but far too strong to drink neat. Made for Jagertee, punch, flambéing, and baking.

Stroh 38
Same flavor, but at a drinkable strength. Great with cola, in a highball, or neat over ice.

Stroh Jagertee
A concentrate of Stroh, black tea, and Alpine spices, ready in the bottle. Add hot water and you’re all set.

Stroh 80 mini
A small bottle for the kitchen or your suitcase. Enough for a strudel or a few glasses of Jagertee.
Stroh 80 burns. Keep it away from open flames unless you’re deliberately flambéing.
Sweet, warm, and full of vanilla
Vanilla & caramel
Smells sweet, almost like a dessert. Vanilla, caramel, and burnt sugar, with a hint of orange peel in the background.
Full-bodied and spicy
Sweet and syrupy, with spices and dried fruit. With the 80, you mostly taste alcohol. Dilute or heat it, and the flavors come through.
Long and warming
Long and warming. Try it once at the top of a cold mountain and you’ll understand why.
Flavor profile of Stroh 80. Stroh 38 tastes the same, just milder, and you can drink it neat.
Three ways to drink Stroh
Stroh is made for mixing, warming up, or cooking with. The only one you drink neat is the 38, preferably well chilled.
Jagertee
Brew strong black tea. Add 2 to 4 cl of Stroh per glass, along with a spoonful of sugar, a cinnamon stick, and an orange slice. Serve it hot in a stemmed glass or mug.
Glass: heatproof glass →Stroh and cola
50 ml Stroh 38 and 150 ml cola in a highball glass filled with ice, with a lemon wedge. This is how they drink rum and cola in Austria, just sweeter and spicier.
Glass: highball glass →As a shot after skiing
Stroh 38, ice-cold, in a shot glass. We don’t recommend taking Stroh 80 as a shot. Always dilute it or use it in the kitchen.
Glass: shot glass →Recipes and cocktails with Stroh
Stroh works best in hot drinks and tropical rum cocktails. A splash of 80 gives them a little more depth.

Hot Toddy with Stroh
Hot water, honey, lemon, and a splash of Stroh instead of whisky. Sweeter and spicier than the original.
Zombie
The best-known tiki cocktail, made with three rums, fruit juice, and a layer of overproof rum on top. Exactly what Stroh 80 is made for.
