SPIEGELAU Vino Grande

Vino Grande revolves around a question every wine drinker asks at some point: do I really need a different glass for each wine? Spiegelau answers it with four glasses that gradually increase in size, allowing you to experience for yourself what space does for a wine.

The series has been around for decades and has therefore become a familiar shape on many wine tables. In addition to the glasses, it includes a flute and two decanters, allowing you to assemble a complete wine set from a single line.

Choosing a bowl by grape

The smallest bowl at 33 centilitres is meant for crisp white wine: little surface area, so the wine warms up more slowly. The 42 cl is the all-rounder that copes with both white and light red. At 62 cl, bordeaux gets the height that lets tannins round off, and the 71 cl is the burgundy basin in which aroma can gather. The 37.5 cl long drink glass rounds out the table with water. For sparkling wine there is an 18.5 cl flute. The decanters come in 1 and 1.5 litres, the larger one taking a magnum as well.

Pouring, decanting, serving

Do not pour past the widest point of the bowl, roughly a third in the larger sizes. That keeps air above the wine and lets you swirl without anything going over the rim. Young, firm red wine gains from half an hour in the 1 litre decanter. Older wine should be poured across carefully to leave the sediment behind. The 18.5 cl flute is a pouring measure for sparkling wine: pour in two goes so the foam can settle, for instance with a Kir Royal or a Bellini.

Crystal glass and the dishwasher

Vino Grande is machine-drawn from lead-free crystal glass. The stems are pulled from the bowl rather than applied, which removes the weak point of a stemmed glass. The glasses are dishwasher safe; place them upright and apart, because most breakage comes from glasses knocking together. Rinse the decanters with warm water and no soap, then leave them upside down to drain.

Looking further

Under Spiegelau the brand's other ranges sit side by side, so you can compare shapes. If you shop by type of wine, look at white wine glasses and red wine glasses. To let a bottle breathe there is a wider choice of decanters, and for sparkling wine on its own see champagne flute glasses. Streak-free drying is easiest with glass brushes to hand.
