SPIEGELAU Willsberger Anniversary

The bowls run from 37.8 to 77.3 centilitres. The 37.8 cl is the white wine size: small enough to stay cool. At 51 cl you have an all-rounder for red and white alike. The 67.5 and 77.3 cl are meant for big reds where you deliberately want room. Beyond wine there is a 31 cl martini glass, generous for a shaken cocktail with a head of foam, a 36 cl tumbler for whisky or a mixed drink over ice, a 19 cl port glass and a 25.2 cl flute. All models come in twelves.

With the large glasses, pour to just below the bend in the wall so the aroma flows precisely toward the rim. The 31 cl martini glass calls for a chilled cocktail without ice: place the glass in the freezer beforehand and serve a Dry Martini or an Espresso Martini immediately after shaking. A large ice cube fits in the 36 cl tumbler, which is useful for an Old Fashioned that you sip slowly. Serve port slightly chilled in the 19 cl glass.

The range is drawn from lead-free crystal glass with a thin rim, so the wine barely runs across glass before it reaches your mouth. That does make the glasses more sensitive to knocks than thick-walled pressed glass. They are dishwasher safe, but place them apart in the rack and do not let the bowls touch. Pick stemware up by the bowl rather than the stem to avoid twisting.

The rest of the brand can be found at Spiegelau. If you're only looking for large sizes, see large wine glasses. For the bar, there are more shapes under martini glasses and whiskey glasses, and for dessert wine, there is a separate overview of port glasses. If you want to know first which bowl shape goes with which grape variety before choosing by brand, start on the overview page for wine glasses and work your way down from there.
