RCR London

London brings together two things that rarely appear in a single series: a champagne flute and two tumblers. The pattern is a diagonal cut that rises from the base and refracts the light in slanting bands, which is especially noticeable in the flute as the bubbles travel upward alongside them.

The sizes are a 16-centiliter flute, a 27-centiliter low tumbler, and a 32-centiliter double tumbler. This covers both the beginning of the evening and what follows, without having to mix two different series. All three are made from Luxion, RCR’s lead-free crystal glass.

OF, DOF and the flute

OF stands for old fashioned and DOF for double old fashioned, two bar names for a low tumbler with a heavy base. The 27 centilitre is meant for spirits over a single ice cube. The 32 centilitre leaves room for more ice or for a short cocktail with some volume. The 16 centilitre flute is on the small side, and that is an advantage: less in the glass means topping up more often, and therefore colder champagne. Compare the tumblers with the other old fashioned glasses.

From aperitif to digestif

Start the evening with the flute and pour at an angle against the wall, so the foam does not run over the rim and the carbonation stays in the wine. A French 75 goes in this same glass, with the gin and lemon first and the champagne last. After that, move on to the tumblers. An Old Fashioned is stirred straight over the ice in the 27 centilitre, and in the 32 centilitre you keep room for a wide strip of orange peel.

Keeping cut crystal clean

The cut is applied on the outside and deepens towards the base, exactly where soapy water tends to sit. Load the glasses into the rack at an angle rather than upright. Luxion is dishwasher safe and keeps its shine for a long time, but the flute is the most vulnerable piece in the range: place it on its own in the rack, with the bowl clear of other glasses and of cutlery.

Going further with bubbles or with spirits

If you are only after bubbles, all the models sit side by side under champagne flutes, and you keep the bottle at temperature with a champagne cooler. If it is the low tumblers you want rather than the flute, take a look at the whisky glasses, where the heavy bases are grouped together. More ranges from the brand can be found under RCR.
