The difference between 34 and 37 cl may sound small, but it lies in the height and therefore in how the glasses are used. The tumbler is low and wide, so a large ice cube fits well and you can smell the drink while sipping: the shape for whisky, rum, and an Old Fashioned. The highball glass is taller and narrower, so carbonation in soft drinks and tonic lasts longer. Pour into the tumbler over one large ice cube instead of loose cubes: less surface area means slower melting and therefore a drink that doesn't become watery within ten minutes. A old fashioned is stirred directly in the glass with sugar, bitters, and whiskey, then garnished with a strip of orange peel squeezed over the glass. Fill the highball glass for a gin and tonic completely with ice first, and only then add the tonic, pouring it down the side of the glass.
