Start with the drinks that appear on your table most often. The 25.5 cl water glass is the starting point and suits a laid table where wine is served as well. The 34.5 cl beer tumbler takes a 30 cl bottle with room for a head of foam, which a standard 25 cl glass does not give you. The 30 cl whisky glass is a tumbler with space for a generous ice cube. The 37 cl long drink glass is tall and narrow and holds on to the carbonation longer, which makes it the obvious choice for gin and tonic or a cola. Pour beer into the 34.5 cl tumbler by holding the glass at an angle first and then straightening it up, so you end up with a two-finger head instead of half a glass of foam. For whisky on the rocks, use one large cube rather than several small ones: it melts more slowly and dilutes the drink less. Build a long drink by filling the glass right up with ice, adding the spirit and then pouring the mixer in down the side of the glass. A 4.6 cl shot glass is filled to just below the rim.

Simple Convention is made from Tritan crystal glass. For a tumbler that goes through the dishwasher every day, what counts most is a hard rim: that is where glasses touch each other in the basket and where chipping starts. The glasses take up to sixty degrees and are not meant to be stacked inside one another, even though the straight wall might suggest otherwise. Two tumblers that get wedged together rarely come apart without damage, so stand them side by side in the cupboard.
