Glass crates

First check how tall your glasses are, then consider the capacity. Tumblers and beer glasses stand upright in compartments about twelve centimeters deep. A stemmed wine glass, bowl and all, sticks out above them. Then you’ll need to fill the crate less full or get a second one. Next, check the compartment size. Thirty-five compartments hold thirty-five standard glasses. If you use wider pilsner glasses, you’ll have fewer spaces in practice.

If the crates are going out the door, a lid is no luxury. It keeps dust and splashes out while they’re in storage. And when you stack them, the top crate doesn’t rest on the rims of the glasses below. Choose the same color for a set of crates, or different colors if you want to sort by type of glass.

Only put dry glasses in the crate. A wet glass leaves moisture in the compartment, and after a night with the lid on, everything smells musty. When storing them clean, place them upright with the opening facing up. When returning them dirty to the wash-up area, place them with the opening facing down so nothing drips into the compartment.

When stacking, put the heaviest crates at the bottom and don’t go higher than eye level. That way, you can still see over the top edge when lifting. If transporting them in a van, place the stack against a wall or secure it with a strap. A full crate is heavy, and a shifting stack causes more damage than the journey itself. Give the catering glassware you use most often its own dedicated crate.

The crates are made of impact-resistant plastic. If you drop one, it won’t break, and it won’t bend under the weight of thirty-five glasses. Clean it with lukewarm water and a mild dish detergent. Abrasive cleaners make the surface rough, which just makes dirt stick to it. Let the crate dry completely before putting the lid on. You can use a pressure washer, but keep some distance from the compartment walls. They’re thinner than the outer rim and can warp under a strong jet.
